A TEST OF FAITH
The hunger for glory is addictive, and humans falls easy prey. A mountain climber was in search of such a glory, and so he set out onto the path of greatness ready to pay any price whatsoever.
He decided to climb to Mt.Everest alone, something nobody had dared to do so far. He set out one fide day, equipped with everything he believed he would need. It was a tough climb, but he kept on moving unflinched. He got so drunk with his day’s progress, and so lost in dreaming of the success to come, that he forgot to notice when dusk arrived. And soon the last rays of sun disappeared leaving him in pitch darkness and chilling cold. Still he kept up his spirits and decided to keep climbing, till he finds a place to camp for the night.
After a while, a blizzard came out of nowhere, and threatened to stop him in his steps. So great was the force of wind, that he lost his foothold, and slipped many meters in darkness. He didn’t know how far he had slipped, and where he was when he finally came to rest. He clung tightly to his rope, and with all his heart called out aloud to his god asking Him for help.
God sensing his desperation, decided to reply for a change.
“ Oh God! Are you there? Help me Lord. Please help me.”
“ I am right here beside u son, what do u want.” Came the divine reply.
“ Please get me safely to ground. Please. I will do whatever you say.”
“ Do you trust me? “ Asked the Lord.
“ Oh yes completely. I have believed in you all my life.”
“ Them let go of the rope.”
The man started thinking now. Leave the rope! Oh what a foolish thing to do. What if I fall hundreds of meters. I will be dead, and all my dreams and aspirations would go to dust. Oh no, I can’t leave the rope. This is my lifeline in these hostile mountains. So he went on thinking, and clung tightly to the rope.
Next day a meeting was called at the resort near the base camp. The blizzard was discussed. Also concerned was voiced for the lone mountaineer who had set out the previous day. He could be in trouble people said. After a long and serious thought it was decided to send out a team of experts to look for the poor guy.
The evening newspapers in the town read so:
“ A man found frozen to death, clinging onto his mountaineering rope, 9 feets above the ground.”
p.s. This story was told to me by a friend. I don’t take the credit for the idea, only of its presentation.
